All was fine until... : Pioneer DVR-810HS DVD Recorder with TiVo Basic Service

I bought 510H-S (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/product/detail/0,,2076_4139_37530022,00.html) and I am very happy with it.
810H-S has TiVo, which is why you cannot edit out commercials. 510H doesn't have TiVo, and you can edit out commercials. But since I already have a TiVo, it's OK to me. I set up the recording using Tivo's Season Ticket and wish list, and check ToDo list. If there are programs worth recording in ToDo list, then I program 510H using Timer. 510H's timer is not bad. Actually, as a simple timer its user interface is quite good. But it's no TiVo. You can also program using VCR Plus, which I don't use. Comparing video quality, I think that Pioneer is slightly better than TiVo Series 2. Since 510H-S has complete editing functionality, it is more difficult to use at first time. It was one of the electronic products that forced me to read the manual and take time to get used to it. It was frustrating for a few days. But now, it's OK. I know what is going on. While I can hear hard disk noise from TiVo, I cannot hear 510H's disk noise at all. I highly recommend 510H-S. But be prepared to read the manual and to have some practice time for a few days. And it will take a week or two to get used to it.
An ideal DVR would be TiVo's user friendliness and convinience plus 510H's full editing functionality. But unless TiVo relaxes restrictions on the rules of recording to DVD, it is unlikely to come. So it is your choice: Tivo feature or full editing ?

Customer Review :

pleasantly relieved : TEAC CD-RW880 CD Recorder with Remote

First, a explication about one of the listed features. It's noted that the unit will stop recording after 5 seconds of silence -- this is a digital only feature and does not apply to analog recording. I'd conception this to be a great feature in case I walked away while recording an lp, but that's just not the case.

Second, will it consistantly detect and insert a track while recording from lp or tape? No, though I have had it work perfectly on a few occassions. What's frustrating is that there's been no rhyme or suspect to it. It hasn't always been dependent on the sensitivity level set for detecting tracks, or the condition of the lp and any scratches it may or may not have. Nothing obvious. On the positive, I haven't had it set erroneous track marks during quit passages, and I personally haven't had any issues with adding tracks manually.

The Quick-Start Recording Guide they supply -- an oversized sheet with connections and a 5-step recording process -- is at once patronizing and confusing. I'm all for simplifying while still outside the bases, but do I need a line drawing that shows a finger pressing the power button to help me turn it on? Doesn't "Press the Power switch" about cover it? I mention this because the schooling for manually adding tracks that's on the same guide is far from self-evident. Their schooling is to "press the Track Increment button" to manually add tracks, but there's no drawing of a finger and button. There's also no Track Increment button, and no it's not the Skip button. It's the record button, and the logic escapes me. You find this out in the Owner's Manual, which no ifs ands or buts should be read before recording anyway. It's short and uncomplicated and does justify the handy features that it does have. (And as mentioned in other review, you do have to choose analog or digital for the source you're recording from; the default is unexplicably set at digital).

The capability of the recordings from analog to digital are quite good. I'd planned on getting a new equalizer for adjusting bootleg tapes and upgrading my turntable etc., but I've become more of a procastinator than technophile, and decided to bite the bullet and by this Teac. Aside from missing a minute high-end, it's doing a great job of converting my records and tapes so far. Sure it'd be great if the track detector worked better, but I went into this not no ifs ands or buts expecting it to perform too well, and so I'm not that disappointed. I wanted an uncomplicated motor that would do a solid job of converting my records and tapes, and that's what I feel I've got. Yes I have to babysit the recording if I want to guarantee allowable track markings, but that's not completely unexpected. And, as they say, your results may vary.

Customer Review :

Works great ... Once you frame it out : Sony RCDW500C Compact Disc Player / Recorder

I bought this recorder in april of 2005 after my previous recorder,a Harmon Kardon Brand, stopped working(5 years)and was not worth fixing(too much money).Like other reviewers, i had no choice but to buy this sony because i could not find any other brands for sale(i have acess to all major sellers of cd recorders). After 8 months of execution and many discs burned,i as a matter of fact don't have any complaints. It is not complicated if you read the manuel Carefully!! The fact that it is a 5-disc player makes it much easier to mix a cd using 1 track from each disc(my first one was a particular tray which was not fun!!!)I Also Use This Recorder To Make Mixes Of Music Dvd(Manuel Recordering, So Be Sure To Get The Level Correct, Or Your Recording Will Be Distorded. It Is distinct For Every Dvd Or Tape So Use A Blank Cd-Rw For practice Before You Start The Final Copy. Also Use The Fade In-- Out Button For Live Recordings, As I Find It Handy For Pausing between Tracks. I far as the finalizing process is concerned,i have not had any problems with this unit, which is a major complaint of other reviewers.I use 3 to 4 distinct brands of Cd-r blanks and always buy 80 minuets.I always description between 75 and 79:57 on the disc because if i am paying for 80 i should get 80,right!! Make sure you buy blank discs that say Digital Audio under the Cd Logo.Any Other Will Not Read,But You Know That Already. Here is my one question with this recorder. After i finalize a disc and play it back,on any given amount of tracks, there is a static underneath the song that makes it unbearable to listen to.It is not every disc i make and sometimes not every track.I called sony and tried thier recommendations for a solution(magnetic static due to other audio/video componets so i moved it away from my other equipment, and try unplugging it for a minute, but both did not work.)I wonder if anything else is having this question and if so,can you offer advice on this issue.Other than that problem,i would give this goods 5 stars but because of this,it gets 3 stars.
